The whole plant, not a scent that resembles it

Two things that smell the same
Imagine two bottles that both smell of lavender. One holds an essential oil distilled from the plant. The other holds a fragrance made to reproduce that scent. To your nose they may seem almost identical, but what’s inside them is not the same.
What an essential oil actually is
An essential oil is a complex mixture of many natural compounds, made by the plant itself. True lavender oil, for example, contains more than a hundred of them. A few, like linalool and linalyl acetate, are present in large amounts. Many others appear only in traces, but together they make up the oil’s full character.
That composition isn’t fixed. It changes with the plant species, where it grows, the season it’s harvested in and the way it’s distilled. Two lavender oils can differ noticeably, which is why we care so much about where an ingredient comes from.
What authentic aromatherapy means to us
For us, authentic aromatherapy considers the whole plant: its chemistry, origin, quality, properties and the knowledge built up around it over time. In practice, that comes down to three things:
- Knowing the material. We choose each oil for its identity and quality, and we start with suppliers and growers we trust.
- Formulating with care. An essential oil’s role depends on how much is used, what it’s combined with and how the product will be applied. A drop in a diffuser blend and a drop in a face balm are not the same thing.
- Using it meaningfully. A roller, a bath and a pillow mist are different ways of experiencing aromatic materials, and each is formulated for its own use.
Natural, and responsible
Natural doesn’t automatically mean gentle or suitable for everyone. Essential oils are concentrated materials, and their safety depends on dosage, formulation and how they are used. Taking that responsibility seriously is part of practising aromatherapy authentically.
Where this comes from
Gioia’s relationship with aromatherapy began in childhood, around her godmother, who used essential oils at home and in her bathing rituals, and later the mother of a close friend, who was an aromatherapist. Years of study, teachers, books, growers and practical experience have shaped how she formulates today.
You don’t need to know any of this to enjoy a Śuci formulation. But if you’ve ever wondered why it smells the way it does, this is where it begins.
